Epilogue
Fionaâs gaze tilted up at the fairy lights hanging from one end of the dance floor to the other. They seemed to blend in with the stars, which looked almost painted on against the inky black drop of the night sky.
There was a bursting kind of happiness swelling in her chest. Fiona was sure she would explode from it soon, but she was also sure that she wouldnât mind if she did.
Addison spun her around and grabbed her by the waist, bringing her closer again while Fionaâs arms rested on Addisonâs shoulders. Her fingers interlaced behind Fionaâs back as they swayed to the music.
They were the only ones on the dance floor, and the song that was playing was one of their favorites. The beat was just slow enough to be right for the part, but also fast enough to make it the perfect dance song. Fiona spun Addison around and it was like an open invitation. More and more guests filled the dance floor and, soon enough, it was filled with most of the wedding party.
âCan you believe we got married?â whispered Addison. âBecause it still feels surreal to me. It feels like Iâm in a dream.â
Fiona laughed and kissed her wife, brushing her lips against Addisonâs. âI know, right? I donât think Iâve ever smiled this much before. My jaw hurts.â She rubbed at it to prove a point and then the song changed to a nineties pop song that had the crowd raging.
The guests, including Fiona and Addison, broke free from their partners and instead tossed their arms to the sky while they bounced rhythmically on their feet.
Less than two hours ago, Fiona and Addison had stood amongst the vineyards declaring their love for each other. Fiona could clearly remember how the warm afternoon sun had shone through the vined arch, sending patterns dancing to the ground in front of them. And she could even remember the faint scent of fermented grapes in the distance. Getting married in Stellenbosch, South Africa, had been Fionaâs idea. The mountain town, which was surrounded by vineyards in almost every direction, had a special place in Addisonâs heart. So, how could they not get married there, especially since they were still living in cold wintry Dublin? Their vows had been just as beautiful as the wine farm.
Harriet had cried like a baby and Shaun, who was Addisonâs maid of honor, endearingly snorted through his tears and kept wiping his nose with his pocket square.
The song ended only for the next one to begin. Fiona wanted to get away from the crowd, even if it was just for five minutes. She grabbed her wifeâs hand and pushed through the crowd toward the now vacant tables and chairs that sat within the clear-span marquee that looked out over rows and rows of vineyards.
âIâm so glad I swapped those heels for these sneakers,â said Addison somewhat breathlessly as she plonked down on one of the wooden chairs. She lifted her white silk dress to show a pair of white converse all-stars.
